In regards to the last question: How do you know we haven't already? You didn't specify they had to be openly furry...

I always thought Teddy Roosevelt might've been a closet furry. All those animal heads on the wall...

Maybe if they'd been mascot heads. ;)

I assume that any of these will likely happen in an interval of four years, so rounded accordingly.

The last election cycle proved that being female is no longer a barrier to entry, so that's just a matter of the right person popping up at the right time. And ideally not being an insane "maverick".

LGBT (maybe less so for T) seem to be about where blacks were 40-50 years ago. That progress may happen a little faster, given accelerated cultural drift, but there's still a lot of work to be done.

I'm not optimistic about seeing an openly atheist president anytime soon.

And haven't we already had our first furry president? Mallard Fillmore? James K Pork? James Garfield? Martin van Buren, the weekend thylacine? Duck?

Agreed, A lot of work to be done for GLBT. Even an Employment Non-discrimination act for folks (Esp. Including Trans folk) would be a big step.

And when will we see the first Jewish president?

Probably after the first Muslim president or Asian president.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw that soon. There isn't a lot of mainstream suspicion of Jews the way there is Muslims or atheists. Lieberman's faith wasn't a negative when he ran for VP.

I honestly thought that I would see a female president long before a "non white."

As for a gay or atheist, I doubt those will come in my lifetime but one could always hope. The human race still needs to come a LONG way.

The "furry" president is just a throw-away question.

that picture Wins teh Internets. and I'm not just saying that because I like you.

WRT to chick vs ethnic dude... I really don't see that as having had much (if any) actual bearing on the recent election. IMHO, what it came down to was the Trad Polit Machine vs the Genuine. and, the Genuine won (both in the democrat primary and in the general election).

I honestly thought that I would see a female president long before a "non white."

Me too. I also thought the first president in either category would have to be a conservative, to reassure people that they wouldn't do something radical.

But I think Jonathan Schwarz nailed this one:
It’s September 12, 2001. You’re sitting in front of a TV, watching footage of the World Trade Center collapse over and over and over again.

All of a sudden, someone from seven years in the future walks out of a tiny temporal vortex, and tells you: George W. Bush is going to fuck this up so badly that in 2008, the United States of America will likely elect as president a black man whose middle name is Hussein and whose father was Muslim. Oh, and he also admits he’s used cocaine.

I think it would have been easier to convince me of the reality of time travel. “No, no, I believe you really are from the future. But the other stuff, that’s CRAZY.”
