Word Chain Puzzles [Nov. 24th, 2009|07:36 am]
Nicodemus
Instructions

Word chains are lists of words where each pair can be read together, forming either a phrase, name, or compound word (e.g. "raincoat" from "rain", "coat"). Each link is a single word on its own (no "ful" or "ism" entries) of at least three letters.

I've provided the endpoints of each chain. Can you fill in the intervening links? Note that the whimsical titles have no bearing on anything. For most I've given you the initial letter and indicated missing letters with hyphens... but on the last challenges you only know the lengths of the words!

Example:

PUGET
S----
G-----
GNOME

Answer: Puget Sound Garden Gnome

I guess I'd better post a couple, jsut to show that I'm trying. :-)

1. "Off Duty?" (5 words)

HIGH
HAND
OFF
BEAT
COP

2. "Preferred Game?" (8 words)

POKER
FACE
TIME
OUT
GUN
COTTON
GIN
RUMMY

4. "Feeling Better?" (9 words)

CRUSHED
ICE
CUBE
C--
OFF
COLOR
BLIND
FAITH
HEALING

I know I'm onto something with that last one, but clearly I am also missing something. "Cop" maybe? I don't know what a "cube cop" is then.

Instead of Cube, I went with

Cold
Cut

To be honest, I was working from both ends and saw "cotton gin" easily enough, but then couldn't figure out how "gun" fit in from the bottom. So I, with the aid of the World Wide Web, learned all about guncotton. It was a truly brain-stimulating morning. :-)

I don't think I'm quite right on this and have been coming back to it but no dice.

MINUTE
HAND
BRAKE
OIL
DRUM
SET
MAID

and

HAPPY
HOUR
LONG
WAIT
BAR
NONE
GIVEN
THANKSGIVING

Sadly though I really don't quite think I'm correct and I've been trying various combinations and these two so far have been the most correct I have discovered.

Not bad! I'd consider that top one "correct" since all the links work.

Try Brake->shake and hour->meal to get closer to my answers. :)

That would make the first one:

MINUTE
HAND
SHAKE
OUT
SIDE
BAR
MAID

and the second one..... Okay , I know I'm totally not right on as the last one doesn't work worth a darn. This is going to take some time hehehe. XD

HAPPY
MEAL
WORM
BAIT
BOX
WINE
HOUSE
THANKSGIVING

HAPPY
MEAL
TIME
LINE
ART
WORK
FIRST
THANKSGIVING

only solution I can think of, though I spent at least an hour on:

HAPPY
MEAL
WORM
WOOD
OIL/ASH
---- <- stumped!
FIRST
THANKSGIVING

also:

SOLD-OUT
CHEAP
SKATES
C---
B------
B--
T-----
P----
SELTZER
WATER
WELL
WISHERS

and my brain died. :3 Fun though!

Nice job on that first one. Your answer works yet it's still different from mine:

happy
meal
plan
nine
pin
head
first
thanksgiving

For the second, try cheap -> crowd

Arrrgh I gave up on No 5... I put "standing" before water but can't make any progress from there, and "Sold-out" has me stumped completely.

But here's No 7, and not going with "HAPPY MEAL" as the first link ;)

HAPPY
FACE
LEFT
TURN
OUT
LOOK
FIRST
THANKSGIVING
