Chilean Miners Rescue [Oct. 12th, 2010|08:27 pm]

First Trapped Chilean Miner Winched to Surface

This has been an amazing story. I think it has received less media coverage than it should've here. (Not enough quality coverage, I felt; a bit of sensationalist stuff.)

This has been a triumph both for the trapped miners as well as the engineers and crews working aboveground to rescue them. Glad to see them making it out at last and in relatively good condition.

I have no idea about the media coverage in the US about this. Media coverage of this is over the top. They worry that all the media attention can be damaging for the miners. They have gotten movie offers, book offers, there is a village packed with journalists from all over the world.

We have gotten quality media coverage and sensantional media coverage. Update every days in every major newspaper. The rescue is followed live in every newspaper now.

Almost nothing at all during the ordeal and efforts. Over-the-top today for the rescue.

Heh heh - you aren't watching the ABC all night news [runs here from about 3am till 6am]. Among weekly sessions of 'the World News Polka' they cover stories that are ignored elsewhere. 2 all-night anchors who are allowed to wing it at times. The Chilean mining ordeal has been a nightly staple for them.

That's the media. They have to talk even if they have nothing new to say. A 5-10 minute update every hour today would probably be more than adequate, but that doesn't keep viewers glued to the set.

Coverage of building the thing wasn't nearly as 'gripping' so you're not going to get much of that.

It's probably not a great story for TV, but it is a great demonstration of lots of people coming together and working around the clock to solve a huge technical and logistical problem so they can save dozens of people that they've probably never met. It shows people at their best.

Exactly. The miners coped with a lot of things and showed great strength. The engineering teams were resourceful and dedicated. It was a real triumph.
