"Earthrise" Anniversary [Dec. 23rd, 2013|01:34 pm]
Nicodemus

Tomorrow is the 45th anniversary of the photo of the Earth rising over the Moon taken by the Apollo 8 astronauts. It's become known as "Earthrise" and is surely one of the most iconic photos of the space race era. This video goes over exactly how earthrise was seen and the unplanned photo op transpired inside the Apollo 8 capsule.

"And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas – and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth." - Frank Borman, 24 Dec 1968

Such an iconic photo

I had this as my Windows 3.1 background for a long time!

Too cool. And amazing we are using new data today for these kinds of historical projects. :)

Yeah, the computational power we have now to recreate the orbital mechanics and line up high-res imagery... versus they had a backup sextant onboard Apollo 8 to take sightings. :)
