It's Gecko-riffic! [Jun. 4th, 2003|09:10 pm]
Nicodemus
News: Scientists reproduce gecko 'adhesive'.

And it scales directly, as opposed to insect techniques, meaning that a large piece of this could support a large weight... like a human... in a fursuit. :> (My mind just automatically adds that last bit these days; I'm not alone in that, am I?)

Link (indirectly) thx to stego_s_aurus.

Heh... I remember the initial reports of that, half a year ago. The supercool thing about setae is that their adhesive properties are purely a matter of geometry. The adhesion is not chemical, and I don't think electromagnetism plays a role; I don't clearly remember, but I think it actually takes advantage of nuclear forces. (Don't quote me.) What this means is that anything with the same shape will have the same property. The gecko can "flex" them, changing their shape, to make them adhesive or not; I don't think the ones that have been prototyped in plastic can do that. But yeah, it's really cool. :D

It sounds like it's Van der Waahl's (sp?) forces, which is sorta friction at the molecular level. So your comments are basically correct, AFAIK.

Interestingly, a number of adhesives may work this way (rather than purely chemical means). So it might be classified as an adhesive yet!

Okay, a bit o' web searching later:

Van der Waal's adhesion in gecko setae [PDF]

Guessed that one right! One point for armchair physics. ;)

See, forget AIDS research and stuff like that. -This- is the kind of thing we should be spending our research dollars on. :)

No kidding! AIDS is so depressing and boring, whereas geckos are FUN!

(Wow, I think that's the most crass and insensitive thing I've ever said! Dang.)

Ooo, gecko fursuit!

Gecko-Man, Gecko-Man, does whatever a gecko can
Climbs up walls, detaches his tail
No, wait, it just ripped off on a nail
Look out, it's an angry Gecko-Man!
