Rats in the News (and Other Stories) [Dec. 15th, 2006|09:33 am]
"Rats on a Plane" Dept:
80 rats escaped on plane. Passengers on a domestic Saudi airline flight were alarmed when the rats escaped from their carrier and began scurrying around the plane. The BBC says they were mice, but has a picture of rats next to the article. I guess what they say is true... all murines look alike. (Thanks to harlequeen for the link.)

"Prince of War and Peace" Dept:
The "Left Behind" series of books has spawned a videogame called Eternal Forces which centers around either converting non-believers to Christianity or shooting them. This has resulted in a number of groups (Christian and/or political) protesting Wal-Mart for carrying the game. In a similar vein, I spotted this CNN Opinion piece calling for Christians to not be political tools and to pay attention to their religions teachings and peacably respect other people, of all the wacky things! I never expected that I'd be agreeing with Jim Bakker's son.

"Good News, Everyone!" Dept:
In case you haven't heard, Futurama is being revived by Comedy Central. They're going to be producing at least 13 new episodes with the original cast. So what's new? Here's a great interview with David X. Cohen, the producer, about the upcoming episodes. All glory to the Hypnotoad!

"Headlines Heads Above the Rest" Dept:
World's tallest man saves two dolphins. You just can't make up headlines that good! And the story pretty much lives up to the headline, too.

"A Little Christmas Spirit" Dept:
A self-appointed Santa's spreading the Christmas spirit, as he has been for years, by randomly handing $100 bills to strangers. Also, since I've been in a spacey mood recently, here's a recorded Christmas greeting[ogg] from nearly 40 years ago. "Good night, Good luck, a Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth."

If I had L33T videogame programming skillz, I would make a game where a scientist goes around trying to educate christians, and if they won't listen, he puts a dunce cap on them.

I wrote a letter to the SF Chronicle in response to that article which they apparently have decided not to publish. From reviews I've read, it appears that when you recruit male followers, they can be assigned any career. Female followers can only choose between nursing and musicians. I see the Gamespy review doesn't mention this bit of sexism on the part of the authors. Either they missed it, or perhaps the company has changed the game since its initial release a few months ago.
