FC Wrapup [Jan. 27th, 2007|02:31 pm]
Nicodemus
I'm feeling a bit better and thought that I'd post some post-FC thoughts:

I think this was one of the best FCs for me. I ran some events, but not too many, and had a great time. I got a chance to actually talk to a lot of people (some of whom I'd had to blow off the last couple of years because I had so many events to run).

Iron Artist
We had a great showing at Iron Artist this year. Thanks to everyone who signed up, participated, and ran the event. (Special thanks to Higgins, who really came through on wrangling equipment.) Dusty, always great on stage, made his second appearance as a challenger. Congrats to Cameroo, a challenger who managed to defeat one of the Iron Artists. Marci managed, yet again, to create a piece of overwhelming cuteness. And we had a wonderful pair of ex-IA judges in Vince and Gneech.

Lite Brite is a theme that we've wanted to do for a while. But cost and planning has always been an issue. We managed to create our own ghetto-pseudo-Lite-Brite sets. They were both larger and cheaper than the genuine articles. And, since I've been asked a couple times, we got the thousands of pegs from eBay.

Improv Workshop
The other event that I was responsible for was the traditional improv workshop. We were scheduled to overlap the end of the FVS (it started at 8, we started at 9:30). I figured that it wasn't a problem since people could always wander in late. Then the FVS started at 9:08 and I was somewhat concerned.

I needn't have worried. We had a core contingent of improvvers, including many familiar faces from previous years. And we did pick up a number of additional people as the night went on. It was a good workshop and I think everyone had fun. Thanks to Brian and Kigs, my cohorts in chaos.

Rodent Dinner
Fellow rodents turned out in force for our second annual rodent dinner. We found a nearby chinese restaurant that was able to seat our party of 11 without a big wait.

Other Bits

  • Wore Safari around the con for about a half hour. He demonstrated his incredible huggability rating.
  • Got to attend the entire fursuit airbrush panel this year. Wonderful demonstration. Thanks Lance and Eric.
  • Had a nice chance to talk with Rubbertex Raccoon. I'll get to see that finished suit at FC next year, right? :)
  • Sold some more copies of my book. What's really flattering is that I'm hearing other furs recommending it for new fursuiters, too!
  • Met Pero. Saw Perro. Don't know anyone named Perrro.
  • Saw a red-tailed hawk from a distance of two feet. Very pretty birds.
  • Huge fursuit parade. Just shy of 300!
  • I actually got a chance to walk through both the dealers' room and the art show. For me, that's unusual.
  • Marko, our charming international guest, was at his first furry con. It was great to get a chance to introduce him to so many fandom traditions.
  • SPark, Ysengrin, Dark Fang, Twig, Rummy, Tilton... Just generally hanging out with so many of my friends! I can't possibly name everyone.

Yay! I'm glad you got a chance to meet him. When building him, huggability was one of the main design goals. :>

You bet I recommend your book to aspiring fursuiters who want to try rolling their own. It's a really fine introduction and has all the information needed to get someone started.

Well, thank you very much. Those are kind words indeed, coming from a professional bibliophile. :D

Yeah, I didn't even see you around, either. Drop me a line and we can set up a time to meet. IIRC, your work is pretty near mine, so we could even get together for lunch during the week.

I really enjoyed your Iron Artist show, Nic. Excellent creative fun makes for a great time and a good show (I caught the whole thing on FCTV).

Will be looking forward to seeing what you gents come up with as a challenge for next year's contestants!

Wonderful to hear it! I'm glad that you enjoyed it. It's a fun format because we both get to throw horrible challenges at the artists and then root for them to create something beautiful. :)

I hope that the FCTV coverage was good.

Well next years convention is called the Fur east. all about Asian cultures and that year will be the year of the Rat. So I expect a good showing from the rodent clan.

Oh, I'm sure we'll be there. Technically, FC will be before the asian new year but, hey, we'll be showing up ready to ring in the year of the rat. :)

And I feel sorry you met Perro! ;) (j/k!)

Was great seeing you...even though the only time we saw each other was in the elevator when I was dragging myself down for something...can't remember what. :P

I was one of those people who bought a copy of your book this year. Thanks for the rodent dinner too.

Question for about your rodent dinner.

The rodent dinner, do you have to be a rodent as your primery online personality to addend? My online personality is a Skunk but the ones that truly know me know I am a Beaver but I dont talk about that too much.

It's sorta rodenty, but all friends of rodents are welcome. It just grew out of a rat meeting into an informal dinner event.

*hugs* Yes, was very cool to get to see so much of you two this year. You're usually so busy. That's to be expected at a furry con though. I suppose we'll get to see plenty of each other soon enough. Hopefully I'll be able to make the rodent dinner next year. Hopefully with a destination offering a more cheesy selection ;-)

Also, perhaps calling it a "Rodent Dinner" isn't the best idea, considering that as word gets around, more and more predators will get the wrong idea. Just a thought :-p
