|The "Doctor Who" Theme

loranskunky pointed out a great YouTube clip about the making of the "Doctor Who" theme. This is the most widely-known version, I think, with all the gorgeous synth effects. The video features Peter Howell who did the new arrangement of the original theme by Ron Grainer (the same guy who did The Prisoner's theme).
Plus you get to see all the lovely synth equipment. Gotta love that Arp Odyssey! And I'd never have guessed that they used a vocoder in the instrumental line.
For best effect, follow that video with this Synthesizer Patel segment from Look Around You season 2.

Going to have to disagree with you there ;)
This version was from the Peter Davison (5th Doctor) era and was the start of the BBC changing the theme for each Doctor. While they kept the same theme for Colin Baker's 1st season, they re-arranged it for his 2nd (and final). Again, it was changed when Sylvester McCoy started as the 7th Doctor, complete with new graphics.
The most well known version is the previous one, from Tom Baker's reign as the 4th incarnation, and is considered the 'definitive' theme. There were very few changes to the original one for this verison. When Big Finish productions
started with their audio plays, this was the theme that they used consistently for many of them... until they moved to the theme that was appropriate for each incarnation.
Aha. There was a good reason I put "I think" in there. We can tell who's the genuine Dr. Who fan and who's the casual viewer here, can't we? :)
*grins* I don't think I'm as rabid a fan as some people out there. But, I'm definitely a genuine fan. I grew up watching Tom Baker's Doctor first of all (from behind the sofa/couch), and then caught every series since. ;>
Cool. Yeah, it's definitely a show with a large fan base. There's also a huge amount of lore because it's run for so long. I like Dr. Who, but definitely can't claim any sort of "fan" status; I'm lucky if I can remember the order of the doctors. :)
I trust you know what the Tardis sound came from?
If you didn't, it was mentioned in that same video ;>
OK. I don't look at those video things. They take way too long to load here.
I did happen to know that one, though. Very creative folks in the BBC studios! But it made for a wonderful and very recognizable sound.
Gotta love the video for the Arp Odyssey and all of the rest of the 80s electronic gear he has. :)
Hey that was way cool. I still love that theme song! really takes me back to the 80's! Before I was a FURRY I was a WHOVIAN!
