Geek Arts & Letters

Some updates in the "arts & letters" categories, though not in that order.

So, I took that Commonly Confused Words test. The result:

English Genius
You scored 93% Beginner, 93% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 83% Expert!

You did so extremely well, even I can't find a word to describe your excellence! You have the uncommon intelligence necessary to understand things that most people don't. You have an extensive vocabulary, and you're not afraid to use it properly! Way to go!

Well, as the son of an english teacher, I'm pleased with this result. I am known as a big stickler for grammar. I have "a stickle the size of a fire hydrant," as they say.

Still, I wonder what ones I missed to not get a perfect score. There was at least one question that I didn't like. Given two words which could fill in a blank in the provided sentence, both options were grammatically correct, yet only one yielded a sensible sentence. Which is the "correct" answer then?

Also in the news (and seen in a couple places around LJ, though I think I first saw it from spikedpunch) is the giant Post-It Note window mural. Being made by engineers, it has a traditional geeky theme of Super Mario Bros., a cornerstone in video game history. It's beautifully recreated, with the Post-Its lending the appropriate chunkiness of pixels.

I note that Samus (at left), also appeared. That's the character from Metroid, as any old-school gamer should know. Geek art and culture at its finest!

BTW, did you know that the adhesive for Post-It Notes was discovered accidentally? They were trying for a regular (i.e. permanent) glue and the new concoction failed. But the results were recorded and a decade later another engineer thought of using it to attach little papers to things.
