A Seattle Riot (if you don't mind)

The Seahawks won the Superbowl, as I'm sure you all know. This was, in fact, my first time ever watching a full Superbowl game. I've seen parts of others in past years. I've seen several Puppy Bowls on Animal Planet, even.

Turns out I picked the right one to watch. The local team won.

In the weeks leading up to this, we went from having blue and green and 12s dotted around the city to having them everywhere. Huge banners down the sides of buildings! Amazing show of fan support. Which, though it's not exactly my fandom of choice, I can totally respect. :)

Then they actually won! And Seattle rioted... kinda. It was a happy, considerate, friendly sort of riot for the most part. Check it out:

That's right, we wait for the crosswalk signal, damn it! (That one early guy must've been visiting from out of town or something.) I love this city.

But there were problems, as you'd expect with a huge number of drunk and delirious people mobbing downtown. The glass and metalwork pergola in Pioneer Square was damaged after a bunch of people climbed on the 100-year-old structure.

However this is the sort of thing that we feel guilty about afterwards. When the city estimated the damages would cost about $25,000 to repair, a local artist and fan set up a crowdfunding site calling for donations.

Within a day, the repairs were paid for (by that effort plus another donation). Any extra cash raised will be used to replant medians where people stomped on the greenery.

Today was the "welcome home" ticker tape parade for the Seahawks. It's estimated that there were 700,000 people downtown! My commute was a mess, I must say, with the ferry boat so full they were even turning away walk-on passengers. The office seemed to get strangely quiet from lunchtime through late afternoon.

And reportedly there were no arrests. Zero problems out of 700,000 fans.

I'm not much for sports but maybe today I'm a Seahawks fan fan?
