Jammin' [Jun. 18th, 2009|10:17 pm]
Nicodemus
Tonight was our (first) jam-making session of the summer. Carrying on the family tradition, both ours and evidently my grandparents'... I'm making up labels and I'm sorely tempted to list an expiration date now! :)

First batch was blueberry (8 jars) and second batch was strawberry (9 jars), both fortified with a little lemon and pinot noir. We have some peaches and raspberries for another batch sometime in the next couple days, too.

Smells and tastes good but it's always hard to tell exactly what the flavor and texture of the finished product will be.

Mmm blueberry. :q Anything home-made I'll take over store bought.

Having been the happy recipient of the Bainbridge Island Riggs jams and jellies in the past I can say that the flavor and texture will be great. And for what it's worth, a year or so ago we cleaned out the space under the stairs and came across a bunch of really old jam the I'd made (way too much of, obviously) and the daughters and I were dumping out a few jars at a time and Ray said "Hey, are you just wasting that?? There's probably nothing wrong with it!!" So he actually ate a couple of jars of some reddish jam--probably plum, and it didn't kill him. I tasted it too, when he did ok. It didn't have any real flavor. But just between you and me I wouldn't eat the ancient jam.

According to Cooking Terms, the measure of a good cook is their jam. (Actually, I think the movie said "her" jam, but things were a little different back then.)

That sounds like a really fun tradition! Especially since good berries are in season right now.

I think...
