Space Jots [Jul. 14th, 2009|11:57 pm]

  • SpaceX made another launch attempt of their new Falcon I vehicle yesterday. They put a satellite into orbit with a really clean flight. Amazing stuff! As for upcoming work, they have a Falcon 9 (their heavy lifter) at Cape Kennedy awaiting test runs.

  • Space shuttle Endeavour had to scrub due to weather conditions once again. They're set up for a final launch window tomorrow (approx. 15 hours from this post) before they have to stand down for a few days. Current forecast is 60% Go, though, and it's about time they caught a break from Nature.

  • The Spirit rover has been stuck in the sand on Mars for a while now. NASA/JPL has set up a new Free Spirit website and project to try to figure out how to get it unstuck. For the record, Spirit has been operating for over 21 times longer than it's design-required lifetime!

Privately funded space flight is very cool stuff, although I'm still waiting for the Space Elevator.

I have so much more respect for Musk / Space X than I do for Rutan / Scaled.

Rutan is essentially just offering a 'thrill ride'. One that I would love to do, but it isn't really 'changing' the access to space.

SpaceX is really 'doing space' seriously, and is going directly up against Boeing, Lockheed, and Arianespace in the launch market. And they look to be a lot cheaper....

That, and most of Rutans comments about 'NASA obstructing him' are total bullshit.
