Post-RainFurrest Post [Sep. 21st, 2009|12:22 pm]
Wow, what a con! That was an amazing and brilliant whirlwind.

I normally don't do con reports but this time I just might. ;) Gimme a day or two to get notes and some pics up.

In the meantime, here's an excerpt (aka edited down version of what I recall saying) from the GoH dinner. It's a bit sappy, perhaps, but if you know me you'll realize that it is most certainly sincere.

I often hear the question "What is furry fandom?"

It's you. Every one of you that says "I'm furry." Every one of you that goes to conventions, sees something that energizes you, pursues it in art, performance, writing, or other ways.

This thing called "furry" isn't something that comes from elsewhere. You define the fandom because it's something that you care about. And I hope that all of you continue to do the weird and wonderful things that make this fandom such a great place. My thanks to you.

I am very happy you had such a good time! I wish I'd had the opportunity to say hello.

Regarding your comment, I think it's awesome and not at all sappy! You've hit upon one of the most interesting points in the furry fandom. The fact that we are fans of material that we ourselves create. That is very interesting. There are lots of "fandoms" out there - Star Trek, Star Wars, the SCA (medieval society), Anime, Comic books, etc... but the majority of those are all fandoms based on existing manufactured media or ideas. Furry may have started out as fans of characters that were in movies or tv shows, but it long ago became self-manifesting. Self-generating. As a fandom, we've taken an aesthetic ideal and made it own own. And that means we're bringing something original and new into the world. And I think that's very cool. :)

Exactly. These days, we are creators as much as fans. It's one of the things about the fandom which is so inspiring, seeing what wonderful things people can do. (And I'm certainly including you in that list of inspirational people!) Thanks.

Aww. That wasn't sappy to me--it was from the heart. And mirrors what we all (I hope) think. I wish I could have been there to give you moral support and see you strut your stuff. I trust you found someone to demonstrate that fursuit for you.

Hope it was a great time!

I'm sorry I couldn't make it for your dinner. Hopefully the contributions of stories from all of us and the memories that ensued made it a special night!

That was a great statement you made at the end of the GOH dinner and so appropriate! Guys like you, and Kage make me extremely proud to be a part of this community and I will always strive to represent the fandom as well you do.

I'm actually going to post a video of the roast a little later with your excerpt in it so I'll let you know when it's up.

It was an honor to meet you and get the chance to talk for a bit over the course of the con - and I'm flattered that you're interested in joining us on our fursuit outings!

Excellent closing statement there. It really summed up the hardest-to-grasp point about our crazy fandom. As Mark Evanier once said, Furries "are fans of each other".
