Friday -- Addendum

I left out a couple bits the other day when I posted:

Went to the Titanium Tea event in the con suite. That was hosted by the knowledgeable Watcher who had a variety of teas (and augmentations) available. Very tasty.

The rooms are fairly nice at the new hotel, I must say. More spacious and with a better bathroom setup, at least in ours; because of the odd building floorplans, it looks like there's a variety of room layouts. Enjoyed a good shower with plenty of hot water and the hotel's complimentary soap, with the signature scent Stabbed in the Nose with Gardenia.

Saturday

Met up with Ysengrin and Dark Fang and prowled around looking for breakfast.

Despite the fact that there are dozens of restaurants within walking distance of the new hotel, none of them appear to be open for breakfast. We ended up back at the hotel's Fountains restaurant.

Got together with Marko, the wonderful rat from Down Under. Possibly one of the most well-traveled con rats though I'm happy to say that rats get around more on planes these days than stowing away on ships so international travel's easier. He had a secondary rat suit with him (always keep a backup rat, that's your lesson for today) but I discovered that unfortunately it would not fit me. I'm just a bit too tall (6'0”-6'1”) for most characters, it seems. Darn.

Then hung out with friends for a while in the hotel lobby. It was somewhat odd not being on staff and without much of a schedule. Took a walk through the Dealers' Den and met up with some of my friends behind the tables. Also picked up “Seventh Chakra” (Yay, Rikoshi!) from the Sofawolf table.

Helped out with the fursuit parade by directing traffic. There were many, many suits in the parade. And I swear I wasn't hallucinating but I saw several of the suits go around twice. Final total was up around 500 which, no matter how you slice it, is a damn lot of fursuits!

Grabbed some pals (including the elusive, effusive, and not-quite-as-drunk-as-last-night Maxx Husky) and headed out for dinner at Hanuman Thai, a little place within easy walking distance. Quite satisfactory!

That evening we attended the live recording of the Unsheathed podcast by Gold and Hirosaki. In case you haven't heard their podcast, it's a writing podcast specializing in furry erotica; yet they manage to keep it more on the writing aspect which is great because I always think there aren't enough good discussions of the process and technique of it, especially when you get into some of these corner genres. This show featured a special Sofawolf interview as they are con GOHs.

Look for that episode on their feed soon!

I think from a con layout standpoint the hotel was great. It didn't feel cramped, but stuff was close enough together that the con still had a nice bustle to it. The wifi was a bit hit or miss, but that's to be expected at any big convention; hotel wireless networks just can't handle the load for an event this size.

From a guest room standpoint, my feelings are a bit more mixed. They either were desperately short of two-bed rooms or they screwed up a lot of reservations; apparently a lot of people were in our situation, where the room had fewer beds than expected. Our room was also right next to an exit stairwell so we got treated to noise from people banging up and down the steel stairs. We're thinking we might try the Ramada next year.

I heard several times that resrvations seemed to get screwed up for folks. Hotel oopsie somewhere behind the scenes? I can't imagine they normally have that much trouble with something so central to their business.

As for the rooms themselves, I thought they were generally pretty nice. Certainly a step up from the Doubletree.

For me it's partly an expectation thing, I think. I'll put up with noise and messed up reservations at a cheap hotel, but at these kinds of prices, everything ought to be perfect.

it was great to see you guys! we also had a great con (still working on my lj post - I just do one big one).

LOL @ "Stabbed in the Nose with Gardenia". we bring soo much stuff but next year I think I'm tossing in a bottle of Dr Bronners. but hey, at least it seems like most folks take showers (without having to be told to by an animated squirrel, heh). ;-)

see you in the future!

For reference next year, I learned post facto that Peggy Sue's was the go-to spot for breakfast. Guess we just never thought to walk south or west!
