Quizzy and the Rats of NYM [May. 31st, 2011|12:28 am]
Nicodemus
Sure, I could write a quiz about the Rats of NIMH but how broadly interesting would that be to my readers? Instead, I'll take an unexpected tack and have a language quiz about words ending in "nym". How many can you name?

(Example) meaning the same: "synonym"

(1) Meaning the opposite
(2) Same pronunciation but different meanings
(3) A fictitious name; an "alt"
(4) Homograph
(5) A name derived from a father's name
(6) A pronounceable initialism
(7) Named for someone: e.g. pasteurization, Parkinson's
(8) Just in case you work undercover, your codename
(9) A place name based on a geographical feature
(10) A reduplicated taxonomical name; you red foxes should know this!

Edit: As usual with my quizzes, comments are NOT screened. If you want to play along, be sure to work out your answers before clicking and checking.

(1) Antonym
(2) Homonym
(3) Psuedonym
(4) Heteronym
(5) Patrinym
(6) Acronym
(7) Eponym? I'm not sure that's quite right... Diseases are often eponymous, named for their discoverer, but I'm not sure its the same thing in the case of pasturization, since eponymous names aren't usually changed in any way, just given possession ie Parkinson's Disease.
(8) ???
(9) This one is just a guess... toponym?
(10) Tautonym

Well done! I was indeed going for eponym. I've heard it applied to pasteurization though perhaps that's incorrect? It's purest form would be using just the person's name.

Added Parkinson's as an example, just so the quiz is clear. (Plus, I'd forgotten to add my usual warning about unscreened comments.)

Either 3 or 8: Pseudonym?

No idea about the rest.

I figured you were going to write a quiz about the Rats of "New York Metro", of which there are plenty ;-)
