Chuck E. Cheese Gets New Look [Jul. 6th, 2012|12:02 pm]
Nicodemus
Seems like it's official that Chuck E. Cheese has a new look. He has gone from a wise-cracking New Jersey rat to a hard-rockin' mouse.

And he has officially changed species, it seems. I mean, mice are nice but that still hurts! What, rats aren't edgy enough these days?

No word yet on whether Chuck E. Cheese restaurants will actually begin to serve edible pizza.

Color me utterly unimpressed. And I rather doubt that kids today give a hoot about rock and roll anymore. They are more into videogaming than playing guitar.

The generation of the rock Gods ended in the early 90s.

I still think it's better than having a mascot who looked like a 26-year-old who was trying to look like a 12-year-old who hung out with little kids. Old Chuck was a lot more awkward than people thought.

I actually like the new look! Still has a nice edge, but more updated. And I think plenty of kids will be drawn to the rock and roll aspect - it's not like music isn't popular anymore, and as for gamers, Guitar Hero/Rock Band are huge!

I myself was a Chuckster at a franchised restaurant location from 1994 to 2003 and am still part of the CEC fandom community today....so I know it all.

Chuck E. began to soften his rat's edge starting in 1992 when his videos began to resemble musical numbers from "Barney and Friends" and shortly afterwards he was officially re-specied as a mouse. Around 1994 was when Duncan Brannan assumed the vocal role as Chuck E. and he only found out about losing Chuck E's voice as of late last week initially from the fan community!</i? Here is the character's evolution (still partially incomplete) as documented by the fandom.... http://showbizpizza.com/ptp/characters/chuckecheese.html

Excellent. I should've known you'd have the inside line on him. Thanks! :)

For the redesign, I must admit I liked it better in 2D and yellow shirt.

Ha! That last comment was golden. =]

I considered him a mouse after he lost his pink tail and his muzzle got smooshed back in the 90's.

Denial is powerful..? There aren't too many famous rats.

Looks like he gets his tail back at least. He needs haunches though. Looks like a kid playing guitar with a mascot head on.

he's kinda been a mouse/rat tranny for a lont time though it seems. Looks like it could be a good new look! No worries, much love for the ratten! (I may be a little mouse biased) :)

The rats don't seem to mind it.  *snerk*

Ratatouille aside, rats aren't a good thing to associate with restaurants, I think.

And that really is a shame. But if I had to guess, that's the driving force!

According tho Chuck E. History he was supposed to be a grey coyote. But when Nolan Bushnell got the costume he ordered from a trade show he found a pink tail with it, signifying it was supposed to be a rat and not a coyote.

The name "Chuck E. Cheese" not only makes you smile, but was also meant to downplay the rat aspect that you just mentioned. =]
