Girl Mistaken for "Skunk", Shot, in Intensive Care [Oct. 22nd, 2012|08:59 am]
CNN: Relative shoots costumed girl after mistaking her for a skunk

Article doesn't say exactly what the costume was but apparently wasn't a skunk costume, just black.

I'm not sure how big skunks grow down there but mistaking a 9-year-old for one is hard to believe. The only interpretation I see is he was basically shooting at a shadow without knowing or investigating what it was at all.

"Police will determine later Monday whether they will charge the shooter."

What? Did they mean "what they will charge him with"?

Your link seems to be borked (href="") and possibly should be CNN

... the man had not been drinking.

Well, there goes that possibility.

EDIT: and apparently the original source: the Beaver County Times

Leindecker said an unidentified male relative mistook the girl, who was wearing a black costume and a black hat with white tassel, for a skunk and shot her in the shoulder with a shotgun.

Sounds like he mistook the hat-with-tassle as a skunk, which makes a bit more sense. I'd still hesitate to shoot a skunk around an outdoor party ...

Perhaps the "Jimbo Rule" was in effect. It's perfectly fine to shoot as long as you yell, "He's coming right for us!" before you pull the trigger. *facepaws* Like I lot of people commented, what the hell are you doing carrying around a shotgun at a kids' party?!?

The person needs a remedial lesson on how to recognize different animals.

If the animal is:
standing upright
walking on two legs and not four
smelling of Chanel
laughing with other bipeds
opening a candy with her hands
carrying a light

then is ISN"T a skunk!

Some people are too eager to use their guns, methinks. They don't have any power in any other aspect of their life, but the gun they can control. Sad.

They did add, however, that the man had not been drinking.

I'm just trying to decide whether that makes it better or even worse.

You would think that he would at least be charged with reckless endangerment. I don't know if he was in an area where discharging a firearm was legal or not. Most cities have laws against it. Let's all go skunk hunting. *facepaws*

How was he not drinking... what happened to positively identifying your target before shooting? This is one of those guys who shoots all the women and children standups at the practice range...
