In Space No One Can Hear You Drip [Apr. 18th, 2013|06:02 pm]
Why do we go into space?

There is the call to explore, the challenging of nature, the discovery of the universe, the spreading of the human species....

There is also the fact that it's just friggin' cool. Check out what happens to the simple act of wringing out a wet washcloth when you're in zero G. :D

(Space news sidebar: Orbital Sciences is trying to do their first test launch. Scrubbed yesterday, planned now for Saturday.)

Space tales

Great bit on wringing the washcloth! I forgot entirely about surface tension.
But why is Orbital Sciences planning a picnic? And are ants a threat? Maybe giant space ants . . Okay, too much for one typo.

Re: Space tales

Heehee. Okay, fixed that. :) Now, space lunches are challenging too, come to think of it...

I'll say this for Chris Hadfield, he has done an absolutely wonderful PR job for the ISS with his work up there with social media - he's brought some of the experience of being in orbit down to all of us here. The ISS is definitely getting noticed again!

It's a simple point, very elegantly (if wetly =:) made - once out of the cloth, the water would normally be pulled away by gravity. Here, though, the surface tension remains quite adequate to keep it happily exploring anything else nearby, such as hands. Hee! A very funky look indeed. I'd be tempted to request a repeat, but with the addition of some food coloring in the water, especially if UV reactive, with such a source nearby. =:D

Was anyone else cringing as droplets of water went flying off with all sorts of electronics EVERYWHERE!

The panels are all designed to be somewhat spillproof in case of lunch accidents and the like. So it's not quite as bad as it appears (but still not great).
