Iron Chef America [Apr. 29th, 2004|12:03 pm]
[Current Mood |hungryhungry]

Thanks to a little tape-delay via 3catsjackson's Tivo, I was able to watch Iron Chef America.

And, despite my hesitancy, it was pretty darn good! They've kept the structure and seriousness (towards the cooking) of the original. Plus they got Alton Brown of Good Eats fame as the commentator! I'm definitely an Alton fan (and he knows what he's talking about) so that really convinced me.

Kitchen Stadium looks fantastic. I was drooling at the wonderful cookware and appliances they got. Wow. Wish I had those... Plus a kitchen large enough for them... Plus a souschef.

The new chairman is, well, okay. He is not going for the flamboyant route taken by Kaga. This is probably just as well, as no one could live up to Kaga! Instead, he's a bit more aloof and businesslike, with the stillness of a master; perhaps it will work.

But the best thing, in the words of MST3K: "No Shatner! We're safe!"

(If you didn't know, he hosted the brief Iron Chef USA special that flopped. The challenger chef on IC-USA, Kerry Simon, actually appears as a judge on IC America.)

*grins* I have to admit, the present incarnation (seen two epsides so far out of four) does stay far truer to the original. There's that sense of urgency and know-how versus now-what in there, courtesy of Alton, though I think they could have picked a better floor commentator. You never got to see Ota or Fukui-san on screen much, but Kevin(?) kept getting in the way of the cooks. If you caught the Making of Special before, they didn't even give the go-between lady any credit at all.

And now I'm dying to find out if the new chairman is actually related to Kaga...

I don't know much of anything about Kaga, but the new Chairman is Mark Dacascos who is from Honolulu. Actual relations, I don't know. I mostly think they were going with the tradition of a very serious but not too good an actor. But I liked the bit where he looks at the yellow pepper, then bites the apple.

If memory serves...

I think they mentioned he was indeed related to Kaga, maybe Kaga's nephew? I could be mistaken, but that's what my brain remembers, anyway.

Re: If memory serves...

I believe you're correct in that he was Kaga's nephew.

Here's the brief and some pics from that Japan Cup Special I was telling you about the other night. Spoiler alerts etc. (Bad fugu, fwiw.) Kaga's nephew here isn't played by the nephew from IC America -- the Japan Cup guy took on a much more flamboyantly Kaga-esque appearance.
