Rats (Okay, Mice) in the News [Jun. 22nd, 2005|12:54 pm]
[Current Mood |amusedamused]

From The Register: The New Food Group

From the article: "The idea, no doubt inspired by edible panties, lets youngsters get their mouths around a mouse and a fine snack at the same time." (Is that the best teaser quote or what? :)

In other news, Google's working on a money service, though they say they aren't planning to compete with PayPal. Might we finally see a broad-enough internet company that they can popularize online micropayments?

they *can't* compete with paypal - eBay owns PayPal, and I haven't seen any stats but I'd be surprised if eBay traffic made up less than 70% of PayPal's total transactions (and, correspondingly, revenue). Google's service will only work if they go after a different market than PayPal's.

I agree. The integration of eBay and PayPal has created a really tight market there; I believe the Google suit when he says they aren't going to try to compete with that.

That's my line of thinking also - PayPal does offer some services in small payments ("tip jars", etc), but they're still quite expensive, and prohibitive for genuine micropayments. Then add in the respective companies' images, with the considerable number of disgruntled users having their accounts frozen on a whim, and difficulties in reversing payments where required, alongside Google's implausibly shiny image, and I'd say they're well positioned to make such a move, if they so choose.

Yeah. We still haven't seen micropayments in the online form originally envisaged. That would take a well-distributed highly-available server pool from a company with good name recognition... Hmmmmm.... :)

I love Google. And for paypal >.> *grumbles* I've had an account for about 3-4 years with a balance of $5. I forgot my password and the security question with its answer. So I've been locke out of my account for a long time and about 6 months they send me a statement. I checked up on it again recently and to gain access i need to send them proof of my identity. *shrugs* it was the $5 sign up bonus anyway =P
